Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) appears to have lost the first vote for Speaker of the House.
While the vote totals have not been officially announced, he garnered around 203 votes, with about 20 Republicans voting against him. A candidate needs 218 votes to become speaker.
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) got 212 votes.
While McCarthy was expected to face stiff opposition from a small group of hardline critics, few predicted the sort of double-digit shellacking that happened on the House floor Tuesday.
The House will now need to go to a second Speaker vote for the first time in a century.
