South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy’s Rebecca Knol says it’s “curious” what’s been talked about by Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen about the cost of nuclear.
Mr Bowen has released new analysis which shows replacing coal-fired power plants with nuclear could cost Australia $387 billion.
“The numbers are fanciful, and there’s plenty of dialogue circulating today on that,” Ms Knol told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
“The cost that’s been put out today by Minister Bowen appears to be about 18 times the cost and almost double what is actually required.
“It would be best probably left to people that are building SMRs or other nuclear reactors to determine costs.”
