Queensland’s ability to fight fires has come under scrutiny after it was reported that 10,000 volunteer firefighters across four years have quit the RFSQ (Rural Fire Service Queensland).
This has left just 26,000 firefighters to help protect more than 90 per cent of the state from bushfires.
Despite the dwindling numbers, the government claims the state is well prepared to handle the upcoming season.
The concerns follow a weekend of severe fire conditions which saw some residents evacuating.
